WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR TALENTS?

I didn't make this cake. I saw it on a friend's bbm page. The maker has some serious skills....
Hey guys, how are you all doing? Earlier today I was thinking of what to write on then i got inspired to write this based on the gospel that waa read which was from Matthew 25 vs 14-30.

And because I have readers who are not Christians I would summarize the story. It was a parable Jesus Christ used to illustrate his second coming and what God expects of us. The parable was about a king giving some of his servants different amount of talents according to their abilities and then he went on a journey. When he came back he asked them for an account on what they did with their talents. The first and second servants who had 5 and 2 talents each doubled it but the last servant who was given 1 talent did nothing with his talent. The King was angry and punished him (the last servant) accordingly.

When I was younger I used to pray seriously for talents. That time I thought that talents were either the ability to sing, dance, act or play a musical instrument. I just realised now that maybe I had some of those talents, I used to play the recorder when I was in primary 3 that should be grade 3 in the US. I was actually chosen with 3 other students to perform at a youth program on NTA 10 channel (my first and only time on television, I can still remember that day and it was really hot in the studio). Okay, that is enough bragging where was i? Yeah, I also loved and still love dancing but can't act or carry a tune to save my life.

So I used to feel really odd and sad because I never really developed my recorder playing talent or love for dancing. Let me say I don't think it was completely my fault. There were no dance classes or camps to help kids that time and when the music teacher that I loved was changed I quit music club. Yes, I am strange like that. I have quit so many things because of flimsy reasons....God help me. Later on in life I have discovered that there are so many talents not just singing and acting.

I discovered my love for writing in 2009/2010. I started because I just wanted to yap without any restrictions but I didn't even know whether I was a good writer. It was only when some of my doctor friends and random people said I was (I still think they are biased. I am not a good writer. I am just average i think) that I decided I should start taking my writing seriously.

I love writing to inspire people. I love writing from the heart. I don't really call my writing ability a talent, I call it one of my many loves. I love baking, I love make up, I love trying to grow healthy hair, I love posing for pictures (weird uhn considering I don't like selfies. Used to learn how to catwalk in my house when I was around 10  years old after watching video fashion....lol).

The parable today made me question what people actually do with their talents. The first and second servants invested their talents to show appreciation to the King. They say your talents would make a way for you. But when the way has been made what do you do with it? Do you think about yourself or about others? I look at some celebrities with so much talents who are successful and I see that majority of what they do is for themselves.

What I learned from the parable was that everyone has been given a talent according to their ability, talents if not encouraged would die (case in point...my recorder playing days) and that talents are given to each person for the betterment of others. The talents given to you should inspire people to be better, it should encourage and motivate people. It is not always about material resources. Everybody is so all about financial gains and me, myself and i nowadays.

Well that is all for now guys. I hope this post helps you rethink some of your actions.

Linda Ikeji's blog is up again, guess the noise got to google/blogger and they had to look into the issue sharply. And for those that were shouting copyright issue, didn't I say that that claim was baseless now did y'all see that it was. I gotta run, i need to take a little nap. I wish you guys a beautiful week ahead.

Thanks for stopping by....

Luv ya,
Petite Diva...

P.S: what is the difference between a gift and a talent? Heard it was different. Can anyone explain?

  1. I can't differentiate between gifts and talents... I have friends who bake, sew, do awesome makeovers, make their hair themselves and I was feeling really bad until one of them pointed to the fact that I was always the appointed spokesperson at any given time, so that counted as a gift as well as my writing...
I used to think that acting, dancing and singing are talents... I probably still think so sef

    1. So you have the gift of speaking in public, you are very lucky. I hate speaking in public though I am forced to do so once in a while because of my job. Thanks for stopping by.....

  2. okay i was watching oprah's Lifeclass a few weeks ago and this is what steve Harvey said and it kinda made sense to me "Your talent allows you to have a wonderful career, but your gift has a direct connection to your calling. Your career is what you pay for and your gift is what you are made for".

  4. Ah, such beautiful and true words! We need to be looking to see how we can help others when deciding on what we want to do with our lives! Otherwise, life can become rather meaningless if it's not enriching others' lives. Thank you so much for writing such a lovely post and I hope you continue to write posts like this in the future! (Also you should join Blog Action Day 2014!)

  5. This is such an eye-opener post. And with your question, i find myself speechless because i forgot what my talent is. Because im in the stage of my life where i just need to study harder and harder just to pass, i totally forgot that i ave something in me that is a gift, and as i try to look back when i was a kid full of dreams and was honing my talents. And for me, gift and talent is the same but have something different in them. Anyway, this is such a great read read dear, thank you so much for sharing <3

  6. Well said girl, I love reading your posts and seeing the occasional devotional post that makes me rethink what I am doing for God and those in my life who I can show His love and glory to! Sometimes I think that I don't have any talents that can showcase God's amazing glory and strength-- but then I remember that they don't have to be very showy and flamboyant to show worth. For instance, I've been told that I'm a very patient, compassionate, and kind person and that I can make people feel comfortable right away. Therefore, when I speak to people who are insecure (international students are who adjusting to a new life), I try to show them kindness and love. Also, people who have wronged me, I try to treat them with compassion and understand their circumstances and realize that I'm not better than them, we all are sinners after all and God saved all of us nevertheless. I'm so grateful we have God to show us the way, otherwise I would be so lost and I wouldn't know what to do with myself in this life-- it would be all so pointless!

    xx Debbie

    1. Girl, who said you don't have talents? You are a great blogger and a fabulous fashionista. I don't have half of the skills that you do. And you are so totally blessed with the gift of patience. One thing I didn't get from God is patience (okay make that 2 cos I didn't get height too). I keep saying I was probably arguing or talking with someone when God was giving the spirit of patience....lol. You are fabulous and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
